BEAST KNOB POETRY AND PROSE SQUARE SEAL. Height:7.8cm (3.07in) , Width:6cm (2.36in) , Weight:450g (0.992lb) A square scholar?seal of Qing dynasty carved from Shoushan Tianhuang stone. The stone is smooth and compact with luminous golden?yellow tone and mellow antique patina. The knob is round?carved as recumbent auspicious beast with plump body and vivid facial features, decorated with scrolling cloud patterns rendered in supple mature carving strokes. One vertical side is fully incised with running?script poetic text, bearing the signature ??Copied from ancient model by Zuishi, tenth day, third spring month of Yisi year??, demonstrating fine integration of calligraphy and carving. The vermilion seal face is a multi?character leisure seal, with well?arranged archaic seal?script in forceful rounded lines and deep grooves, covered with traces of aged cinnabar paste. Combining fine material, beast carving and literary epigraphy, it represents a fine example of Qing?period literati Tianhuang seal.
