Federal agencies rotate furniture on long cycles (10 to 20 years), so when a lot hits the auction block it's often Herman Miller, Steelcase, or Knoll commercial-grade pieces that retailed for $500 to $3,000 each and are selling at $20 to $100. GSA Auctions handles federal office surplus, while state and municipal building furniture moves through GovDeals and PublicSurplus. Common lots include task chairs, modular desks, filing cabinets (lateral and vertical), conference tables, partition systems, and storage cabinets. Lots are often large (50 to 500 units) and require pickup with a truck or trailer.
