5 VINTAGE PAPERBACK NOVELS - EUGENIA PRICE GEORGIA AND SAVANNAH TITLES PLUS HELEN HOOVEN SANTMYER'S "...AND LADIES OF THE CLUB" AND "THE FIERCE DISPUTE" Five used paperback historical novels, all softcover, photographed on a dark oak table. Three by Eugenia Price: "To See Your Face Again," a Berkley Book, ISBN 0-425-09203-8, cover priced $4.50 U.S.; "Bright Captivity," Book One of the Georgia Trilogy, a Bantam Book, ISBN 0-553-29523-3, $5.99 U.S.; and "Where Shadows Go," Bantam, ISBN 0-553-56503-6, $6.50 U.S. Two by Helen Hooven Santmyer: "...And Ladies of the Club," a Berkley Book, ISBN 0-425-10243-2, $5.95 U.S., with the back-cover headline "ALL OUR GOLDEN YESTERDAYS"; and "The Fierce Dispute," a St. Martin's Press paperback marked "First time in paperback." Two used-bookstore rubber stamps are present: a red stamp inside one Price title reading "2ND HAND BOOKS / 302 E. MAIN / Weatherford, OK. 73096 / 772-2652 / PAPERBACKS - 1/2 COVER PRICE," and a blue stamp reading "Dog-Eared Paperbacks ... RUIDOSO, N.M. 88345" with a Mechem address, partly obscured by a heavy black marker strike-through. Flaws to know about: creased and rubbed spines, soiled and scuffed covers, chipped and worn corners with paper loss on "Where Shadows Go," toned and tanned page edges, price stickers and sticker residue on the back of "Bright Captivity" including a "4.48 OUR PRICE" label and a "34 DAL 102" tag, ink marks, and the bookstore stamps described above. UNTESTED and uncollated - the books were not read through or collated page by page. Sold as a lot of five paperbacks. Description Form: five softcover paperback novels, reading copies, no hardcovers and no dust jackets involved. Construction and finish: glossy pictorial covers, several with raised gold and foil lettering - "To See Your Face Again" has gold foil title lettering on a white violet-strewn ground, "Where Shadows Go" has white lettering and dogwood blossoms on deep blue foil, "Bright Captivity" has gold foil lettering over a St. Simons beach scene, "...And Ladies of the Club" has purple and pink foil lettering on cream, and "The Fierce Dispute" has red foil lettering on pink. "...And Ladies of the Club" is very thick, consistent with its published length of roughly 1,176 to 1,300 pages. Marks and imprints: "To See Your Face Again" reads "A BERKLEY BOOK 0-425-09203-8 ($6.25 CANADA) $4.50 U.S." and is billed as "The magnificent sequel to the million-copy New York Times bestseller SAVANNAH" and "A SELECTION OF THE LITERARY GUILD." "Bright Captivity" reads "Book One of the Georgia Trilogy," ISBN 0-553-29523-3. "Where Shadows Go" reads ISBN 0-553-56503-6, "A stirring saga of love and friendship by the New York Times bestselling author of Bright Captivity." "...And Ladies of the Club" carries "#1 THE YEAR'S BESTSELLER" and "A BERKLEY BOOK 0-425-10243-2 ... $5.95 U.S." "The Fierce Dispute" is a St. Martin's Press printing whose spine ISBN reads in part 0-312-910 and is only partly legible in the photographs, so it is not quoted in full. An "About the Author" leaf in one Price volume reads "Eugenia Price is known around the world as a master storyteller. The author of thirty-six books, both fiction and nonfiction, she lives on St. Simons Island. She celebrated her seventy-fifth birthday in June 1991." Size: each approximately 6.75 inches tall by 4.25 inches wide, standard mass-market paperback format, with "...And Ladies of the Club" roughly 2 inches thick. Attribution note Eugenia Price, 1916 to 1996, was one of the best-known novelists of the coastal South, and her St. Simons Trilogy written between 1962 and 1969 helped renew interest in Georgia's Golden Isles and contributed to the founding of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in 1965, per the New Georgia Encyclopedia. The same source places "To See Your Face Again" in 1985 as part of the Savannah quartet with "Savannah," "Before the Darkness Falls," and "Stranger in Savannah," and dates the Georgia Trilogy as "Bright Captivity" 1991, "Where Shadows Go" 1993, and "Beauty from Ashes" 1995. Note for series collectors: this lot contains books one and two of the Georgia Trilogy but NOT the third title, "Beauty from Ashes," and it contains one of the four Savannah quartet books only. Helen Hooven Santmyer, born in Cincinnati in 1895 and raised in Xenia, Ohio, died in 1986 and became a literary sensation in her late eighties.
