2 VINTAGE WESTERN BELT BUCKLES - GERMAN SILVER, ONE MARKED IRVINE & JACHENS INC. OF SAN FRANCISCO - BULL RIDER TROPHY-STYLE BUCKLE WITH BLANK ENGRAVING RIBBON PLUS A HAND-ENGRAVED FLORAL OVAL Two honest, wearable old western buckles, both German silver, both marked on the back, and one of them by a name that western collectors know. The first is a trophy-style rodeo buckle - an oval German silver plate with a heavy twisted-rope border, deeply hand-engraved floral and scroll panels in each corner, a raised brass or bronze figure of a rider aboard a bucking bull applied in the center, and a curved brass presentation ribbon banner across the lower face that is completely BLANK and was never engraved. Its back is stamped IRVINE & JACHENS / GERMAN SILVER / JACHENS INC. The second is a plain-center oval buckle with beautifully hand-engraved wheat-and-scroll floral borders and a smooth polished center panel, stamped GERMAN SILVER on the reverse with no maker's name. Both are the traditional bar-and-hook style that fits a standard western belt. Sizes run approximately 3 inches by 2.25 inches for the bull rider and approximately 2.75 inches by 2 inches for the engraved oval, per the tape-measure photographs. Flaws to know about: both show real wear - heavy fine surface scratching and swirl marks across the polished areas, tarnish and dark patina, some loss of brightness on the brass, small spots of rust and corrosion pitting on the backs around the bar and hook, and glue or adhesive residue on the reverse of the plain buckle. Sold as a lot of 2 buckles. Description Buckle 1 - bull rider trophy-style buckle. Oval, slightly domed German silver plate with a heavy applied twisted-rope border running the full circumference. Four corner panels are deeply hand-engraved with western floral scroll and leaf work. The center carries an applied brass or bronze figural of a cowboy riding a bucking bull, the bull with head down and hind legs kicking, the rider leaned back with one arm up - a classic rodeo bull riding trophy motif. Below and to the right, a curved brass presentation ribbon banner is applied across the face, with engraved end scrolls and a completely blank, unengraved center - no name, no event, no year, no placing. A small applied silver starburst or rowel element sits at the left of the center field. Marks - the reverse is stamped in three lines: IRVINE & / GERMAN SILVER / JACHENS INC. No date, no sterling mark, and no event or presentation engraving anywhere on the piece. Hardware - traditional construction with a brass or bronze belt bar riveted across the back and a belt hook at one end. Both are present and appear solid. Size - approximately 3 inches on the long axis by 2.25 inches on the short axis, per the tape-measure photographs. Buckle 2 - hand-engraved plain-center oval. Oval, domed German silver plate with no applied elements. The entire border is hand-engraved with a flowing wheat-sheaf, feather, and scroll pattern with beaded and stippled accent lines and small engraved rosettes at the four quarter points, leaving a large smooth polished oval center panel that is blank and was never personalized. The engraving is genuinely nice work - crisp, deep, and hand-cut rather than stamped. Marks - the reverse is stamped GERMAN SILVER along one edge. No maker's name, no date, no sterling mark, and no owner engraving. Hardware - brass belt bar riveted across the back and a belt hook, both present. Size - approximately 2.75 inches on the long axis by 2 inches on the short axis, per the tape-measure photographs. A measuring caution that applies to both: in every tape frame the tape lies loose across the buckle or beside it rather than being hooked to an edge, so all of these figures are close estimates only. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs before bidding, particularly if you are buying to fit a specific belt. Neither buckle was weighed. Which mark goes with which buckle: one back is stamped IRVINE & JACHENS INC. / GERMAN SILVER and the other is stamped GERMAN SILVER only. Based on the oval proportions in the photographs, the Irvine & Jachens mark appears to belong to the bull rider trophy buckle and the plain GERMAN SILVER stamp to the hand-engraved oval - but the two backs were photographed separately and I cannot be completely certain of the pairing from the photographs alone. Bidders who care which buckle carries the maker's name should ask before bidding so it can be confirmed in hand. Photographed on a dark oak table.
