2 VINTAGE WESTERN RODEO BELT BUCKLES - SADDLE BRONC RIDER MOTIFS - ONE STAMPED COMSTOCK / GERMAN SILVER / SILVERSMITHS OF CARSON CITY, NEVADA - ONE CAST SOLID BRASS OR BRONZE WITH HORSESHOE CORNERS A second pair of honest old western buckles, both built around the saddle bronc rider, and one of them carrying a maker's mark that ties straight back to the buckle in the previous lot. The first is an oval buckle with a hand-engraved western landscape - mountain ranges, sun rays, cactus, and prairie brush - with a raised brass or bronze saddle bronc and rider applied in the center, the horse bucking with its head down and the rider leaned back. The back is stamped in three lines: COMSTOCK / GERMAN SILVER / SILVERSMITHS. The second is a smaller rectangular buckle cast in solid brass or bronze, with a raised horseshoe at each of the four corners, a saddle bronc and rider in high relief in the center, a rail corral fence with two figures watching from the rails, and mountains in the distance - a one-piece casting with no applied silver and no maker's name found on it. Both are traditional bar-and-hook buckles for a standard western belt. Sizes run approximately 3.25 inches by 2.25 inches for the oval and approximately 2.75 inches by 1.75 to 2 inches for the rectangular casting, per the tape-measure photographs. Flaws to know about: the oval is heavily scratched and swirl-marked across the whole engraved face with the engraving softened by wear, and it is tarnished and dirty on the reverse; the brass casting carries an overall dark and blotchy patina with distinct green verdigris corrosion on the back and around the recesses, plus a few whitish deposits and light pitting. Neither is engraved with any name, event, or year - no presentation engraving anywhere on either buckle. Sold as a lot of 2 buckles. Description Buckle 1 - Comstock oval, engraved ranch scene with applied bronc rider. Oval, gently domed German silver plate with a beaded or ramp-cut border line following the rim. The entire field is hand-engraved with a western landscape: a mountain range across the upper field, engraved sun rays or starburst at the right, a tall barrel or saguaro-form cactus at the left, and stippled and line-engraved grass and brush across the lower field. Applied in the center is a raised brass or bronze saddle bronc figure - horse bucking with head and neck driven down and hind legs kicking out, rider seated with one arm up. The figure is a separate applied element and appears securely attached. Marks - the reverse is stamped in three lines: COMSTOCK / GERMAN SILVER / SILVERSMITHS. No city, no date, no model number, no sterling mark, and no presentation engraving. Hardware - a slender bar riveted across the back and a single round belt hook stud at one end, both present and appearing solid. Size - approximately 3.25 inches on the long axis by 2.25 inches on the short axis, per the tape-measure photographs. Buckle 2 - cast rectangular brass or bronze bronc buckle with horseshoe corners. Rectangular with slightly rounded corners, cast in one piece with the design in raised relief. A horseshoe sits at each of the four corners, heel-up, forming the border decoration. The center carries a saddle bronc and rider in high relief, the horse bucking hard with the rider's arm up and his hat brim shown in profile. Behind them, a rail corral fence runs left and right with a figure standing at the fence on each side and low mountains beyond, all cast in shallow relief. A small raised monogram or logo is cast into the lower center of the face beside the horse - it is too small and too worn in the photographs to read, so no maker is claimed from it. Marks - no maker's name, no metal mark, no date, and no legible mark of any kind was found on the back or edges. The only mark is the small illegible cast device on the face. Hardware - a brass belt bar across the back at one end and a wide flat brass belt hook tab riveted at the other, both present and appearing solid. Size - approximately 2.75 inches wide by 1.75 to 2 inches tall, per the tape-measure photographs. A measuring caution that applies to both: in every tape frame the tape lies loose across or beside the buckle rather than being hooked to an edge, so all of these figures are close estimates only. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs before bidding, particularly if you are buying to fit a specific belt. Neither buckle was weighed. Photographed on a dark oak table.
