The largest is a rodeo trophy-style buckle in a scalloped rectangular form with a hand-engraved leaf and fern field, a twisted rope edge, and a copper calf-roping scene of a mounted roper with his loop out on a running calf, framed by a plain copper ribbon at the top and a blank copper banner at the bottom that were never engraved with a name or event. The second is a small oval with a brass bucking horse and rider over a finely engraved ranch scene of a corral fence, barn, windmill, hills, and sagebrush. The third is a larger oval with a brass jockey on a running race horse against an engraved field with floral side panels, a twisted brass rope edge, and two blank brass ribbon banners top and bottom. All three have intact back bars and hooks and are wearable, and the group displays well together in a shadow box, western room, or tack room. Sold as a lot of three pieces. Irvine opened an engraving and badge shop in San Francisco in 1886, rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the firm became Irvine & Jachens in 1926, working at 1068 Mission Street until about 1950 before moving to Daly City, where the badge business still operates, according to the company's own published history and badge-collector research from Police Guide. The firm also produced silver work for parade saddles and western buckles, and Christian Stegman, who bought the company in the 1920s, later saw his sons divide the business, with Howard Stegman renaming his buckle line Comstock Silversmiths and moving it to Nevada around 1970, per accounts published by Comstock Heritage and Beal's Cowboy Buckles. Of interest on the roping buckle here, the reverse reads IRVINE & COMSTOCK SILVER JACHENS INC, which is the Irvine & Jachens mark using Comstock Silver as the trade name for their nickel-silver alloy rather than the later separate Comstock Silversmiths stamp. The jockey buckle carries only a GERMAN SILVER stamp and is offered unattributed. Old eBay printouts appear incidentally in a few photographs and are prior purchase records, not part of this lot. All three buckles are structurally sound in the photographs, with intact back bars, hooks, and overlay figures, and no bends, breaks, splits, or repairs are visible. Expected age wear is present. The jockey and race horse buckle shows the heaviest surface scratching and scuffing across the silver-tone field, along with dulling and darkening of the brass rope edge and banners, and the brass back bar shows tarnish. The small bronc-rider oval also shows notable fine scratching across its engraved field, and its reverse shows green verdigris spotting, darkened tarnish, and dried paper or adhesive residue where an old label was applied.
