IMPERIAL GLASS MARIGOLD CARNIVAL COOKIE OR CRACKER JAR WITH LID - HOBSTAR PATTERN A very attractive marigold carnival glass covered cookie or cracker jar in Imperial Glass Company's Hobstar pattern, one of the classic American carnival glass designs. The heavy cylindrical body is deeply pressed with large many-pointed hobstars set inside connected oval bands, surrounded by fine diamond-point and fan cutting, and the whole surface carries a rich marigold iridescence that flashes gold, green, pink, and violet as it turns in the light. The domed lid repeats the pattern with a sawtooth-edged crown and a heavy faceted button finial, and the underside of the base is pressed with a bold star. Sometimes called a biscuit barrel or cracker barrel, this form is one of the most recognizable pieces in the Hobstar line and displays beautifully on a kitchen counter, hutch, or shelf. Excellent for cookies, crackers, candy, or dry goods, or used purely decoratively as a canister or countertop vase. Sold as one two-piece set: jar and matching lid. Description Maker and pattern: Imperial Glass Company, Bellaire, Ohio; Hobstar pattern, also referred to as Carnival Hobstar or Imperial Hobstar. Color and finish: marigold carnival glass - clear glass base with an iridescent orange-gold surface spray, showing strong multicolor flash across the raised pattern. Form: straight-sided covered cookie or cracker jar, sometimes cataloged as a biscuit or cracker barrel, with a domed sawtooth-crowned lid and heavy faceted button finial. Height: approximately 7-1/2" to 8" tall overall with the lid in place per the tape-measure photos; documented examples of this jar are generally listed at 8". One important collecting caution: the Hobstar cracker jars were reissued by Imperial in later years, and reissued examples should carry the IG logo.
