Marigold Carnival Compote

ANTIQUE MARIGOLD CARNIVAL GLASS FOOTED COMPOTE - NEAR-CUT HOBSTAR AND FILE PATTERN WITH BEADED RIM A tall footed compote in marigold carnival glass, pressed in a bold imitation-cut geometric pattern of hobstars, fine file and diamond fill, star medallions, and arching miter bands. The iridescent spray is strong and even, reading fiery orange-amber over the crest of the pattern with pink, gold, and faint blue-green highlights, and deepening to a rich red-orange in the thicker glass of the stem and foot. The bowl flares to a scalloped rim finished in a row of raised beads, drops to a paneled baluster stem, and rests on a domed, radiating foot with a matching beaded scalloped edge. A handsome display piece - striking on a sideboard or dining table, and equally usable for fruit, nuts, wrapped candy, or as a stemmed centerpiece. Sold as one piece. Description Footed compote, comport, or stemmed bowl form in pressed marigold carnival glass. The bowl is a deep round-flared shape with eight scalloped rim sections, each rim edge finished with a continuous band of small raised beads. Measures approximately 8" to 8-1/4" tall and approximately 7" to 7-1/2" across the rim per the tape-measure photographs. The foot diameter was not measured with the tape. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Exterior pattern: vertical arched panels centered by large hobstars, filled and framed with fine cross-hatched file, diamond point, and radiating fan and star motifs, with plain raised miter ribs dividing the panels - a classic "near-cut" imitation-cut-glass design. The interior carries the same pattern in relief, visible through the glass. Stem is a paneled, slightly waisted baluster. The foot is domed and pressed with radiating panels containing hobstar and fan medallions, with a beaded scalloped outer edge and a rayed center on the underside. No maker's mark, signature, IG monogram, or paper label is present. The base is smooth pressed glass with mold detail only. Attribution note Marigold is the most common carnival glass color, produced by spraying a metallic salt solution over clear glass before firing. Geometric imitation-cut designs of this type were an Imperial Glass Company specialty; carnival glass reference sites, including Carnival Glass Worldwide, describe Imperial's early production as pressed "near-cut" glassware made to imitate American brilliant cut crystal, with hobstar-based geometric patterns used across their early carnival lines from about 1910 through the late 1920s. Old Imperial carnival was not marked, and the familiar IG monogram was not used until the company began marking wares decades later, so an unmarked example is normal for the early period. Imperial and others also reissued carnival glass from old molds during the 1960s and 1970s revival. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. From the photographs the compote presents well, with strong overall iridescence, sharp mold detail, and no cracks, breaks, or repairs observed. Beaded and scalloped rims on pressed carnival glass are the most fragile areas and are prone to fleabites, tiny nicks, and flaked bead tips, so bidders should inspect the rim and foot edge photographs closely. Expect light surface scratching in the bowl interior, minor iridescence wear or dulling on high points, and normal shelf wear on the underside of the foot from age and use. Small mold lines, straw marks, and tiny bubbles or inclusions in the glass are original manufacturing characteristics and not damage. No chips or cracks are called out by the consignor, but no warranty is made as to hidden fleabites or flaws. Photos are part of the description.
