HiBid Description
LOT OF 3 VINTAGE WESTERN BELT BUCKLES - IRVINE & JACHENS / COMSTOCK SILVER, RANCH SCENE & CALF ROPING
Three vintage two-tone Western belt buckles from an estate collection, all of the classic mid-century trophy-buckle style: silver-tone bases with hand-engraved scroll and floral work, applied brass Western figures, and blank brass ribbon banners left un-engraved for a name, ranch, or event. Two of the three carry the IRVINE & / COMSTOCK SILVER / JACHENS INC. maker stamp on the reverse. Sold as a lot of 3.
Buckle 1 - Ranch Scene, Irvine & Jachens Comstock Silver
Large scalloped/shaped rectangular buckle, the most detailed of the three
Measures approximately 3-1/2" wide per the tape-measure photos; bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs
Deeply worked ranch landscape: applied brass steer with a mounted roping horse and rider in pursuit, background windmill, ranch house, corral gate with two standing cowboy figures, and sagebrush across the foreground; beaded inner border and engraved scroll corners
Two blank brass ribbon banners, top and bottom, for engraving
Reverse stamped IRVINE & / COMSTOCK SILVER / JACHENS INC. with three-loop belt hardware
Heaviest wear of the group - noticeable surface scratching across the silver field, visible in the close-up photos
Buckle 2 - Calf Roping Oval, Nickel Silver
Oval buckle with a twisted brass rope edge and engraved scroll and feather-plume field
Measures approximately 3-1/2" wide x 2-1/2" tall per the tape-measure photo
Applied brass calf roper on horseback with rope extended to a running calf, framed by two blank brass ribbon banners
Reverse stamped with partially legible lettering reading ...CKEL SILVER (nickel silver); no maker name legible in the photographs, so no maker is claimed for this piece
Reverse shows soldered bar and post hardware with typical age darkening
Buckle 3 - Horse Head Oval, Irvine & Jachens Comstock Silver
Oval buckle, hand-engraved floral and scroll silver-tone field with a brass rope-twist outer edge
Applied brass horse head as the central motif
Measures approximately 3-1/2" wide x 2-1/2" tall per the tape-measure photo
Reverse stamped IRVINE & / COMSTOCK SILVER / JACHENS INC.
About the maker
Irvine & Jachens traces to 1886, when J.C. Irvine began making police stars, badges, and metal tags at Kearny and Market Streets in San Francisco; the firm was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire, took the Irvine & Jachens name in 1926, and moved to 6700 Mission Street in Daly City around 1950. Reference silver-mark listings identify IRVINE & JACHENS INC. of San Francisco and Daly City as makers of high-quality emblems, badges, and buckles. The related "Comstock" name comes out of the same lineage - Christian Stegman bought the operation in the 1920s, and by 1971 his son Howard had split off the buckle side and renamed it Comstock Silversmiths, relocating to Carson City. Buckles carrying the combined Irvine & Jachens / Comstock Silver stamp are generally attributed to the mid-century decades of that production run; no specific date is claimed here.

Condition
Used vintage condition, sold as-is. All three buckles show honest age and wear consistent with use and storage: surface scratching (heaviest on the ranch-scene buckle), light dings, darkening and tarnish in the recesses, spotting and oxidation on the reverses, and wear to the brass overlay high points. Belt bars and posts appear intact and original on all three in the photographs. Brass banners are blank and un-engraved. No repairs, cracks, or missing applied elements were observed, but bidders should study every photograph closely and satisfy themselves as to condition before bidding. Photos are part of the description.
Notes for bidders
No belts or straps are included - buckles only
