TWO OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY YEARBOOKS - THE REDSKIN, 1959 AND 1960, STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA The third pair from this run of Stillwater yearbooks, and the first two in the group from the Oklahoma State University era, the school having been renamed from Oklahoma A&M College in 1957 while the annual kept its longtime title, The Redskin. The 1959 volume is bound in rust-orange pebble-grain boards with blind-ruled panel lines and applied black-and-gold shield labels reading REDSKIN and 1959, with a gilt-ruled spine panel reading 1959 REDSKIN, below it OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY, and at the tail VOL 50, marking the fiftieth volume of the series. The 1960 volume is bound in gray-and-black woven linen-look cloth with an inset copper and white triangle design carrying the numerals 1 9 6 0 and a copper-stamped REDSKIN, with a matching copper spine panel reading 1960 REDSKIN. Both are thick end-of-the-fifties campus records with class portrait sections running page after page, residence hall and Greek group photographs, organizations, and full athletics coverage. Both books show handling wear and surface marks on the covers, and a yellow adhesive flag has been left in the pages of one volume, all detailed below. Companion lots to the 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1947 Redskin volumes offered separately in this sale. Sold as a lot of two hardbound volumes. Description The 1959 Redskin, Volume 50 - rust-orange pebble-grain hardcover with blind-ruled dividing lines and applied gold-on-black shield labels reading REDSKIN and 1959. Spine reads 1959 REDSKIN in a gilt-ruled panel with OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY beneath and VOL 50 at the tail. Interior pages photographed include a double-page black-and-white aerial campus photograph, a BASKETBALL and FOOTBALL section with action shots and small individual player portraits, a COLLEGIATE FFA feature headlined Oldest Chapter Is Host To State Convention with two large chapter group photographs and printed row-by-row name keys, and multi-page SOPHOMORE CLASS portrait grids with names, hometowns, and majors set beneath each photograph. The 1960 Redskin - gray and black woven-texture cloth hardcover with an inset copper and white triangular design carrying 1 9 6 0 and a copper-stamped REDSKIN. Spine reads 1960 REDSKIN in a copper panel. Interior pages photographed include blue-duotone stadium crowd endpaper photographs; a title page with the Oklahoma State University seal alongside the older Agricultural and Mechanical College 1891 seal, reading The REDSKIN, A Yearbook Published for the Student Body, OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY, Stillwater, Oklahoma, with credits to DAVID LAWSON, Editor; DARLENE GRISSOM, Associate Editor; PAUL TATE, Assistant Editor; E. L. WOODSON, Director of Student Publications, and the date MCMLX; a residence hall spread for WEST BENNETT HALL facing a feature headlined Grand Council Scholarship Trophy Secured; and professional school class pages headed FIRST YEAR VETERINARY MEDICINE and SECOND YEAR VETERINARY MEDICINE with full name keys. Each volume measures approximately 12 inches tall by roughly 9 to 9-1/2 inches wide per the tape-measure photographs. In the height photographs the tape is laid on top of the closed book, and in the width photographs the hook plate is resting on the carpet off the edge of the book rather than hooked on it, so all figures are close estimates. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Both are heavy, thick, sewn-and-cased hardbound volumes, and both appear to be closer to an inch thick at the spine. Attribution note Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College at Stillwater, founded in 1890, was renamed Oklahoma State University in 1957, which is consistent with the OSU spine and title-page wording on both of these volumes and with the paired A&M and OSU seals printed on the 1960 title page. The annual continued to be published under the title The Redskin for roughly eighty years, a name the university has since retired and publicly addressed as reflecting the racial stereotyping of its era, as documented by the Stillwater History Museum, and library cataloging records for the series reproduced at the Internet Archive show the same title carried across both the A&M and OSU periods. The VOL 50 marking at the tail of the 1959 spine indicates the fiftieth volume of the series. Identification and dating are offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and are not guaranteed. The 1959 back cover shows a distinct dark scuff and rub streak across the upper right area along with lighter scratching and scattered surface marks. The 1959 corners and spine ends show bumping and rubbing, with wear visible at the lower corner. The applied cover labels on the 1959 volume show light edge wear.
