The 1937 volume is the showpiece of the pair, bound in deeply embossed gray-and-black textured board with a maroon Art Deco design and a raised gold-toned medallion of a Victorian campus building, apparently Old Central, with a gilt spine panel reading THE 1937 REDSKIN and a second panel reading OKLAHOMA A AND M COLLEGE, STILLWATER OKLAHOMA. The 1947 volume is bound in tan leatherette with a green-printed state agricultural and mechanical college seal, ruled lines, and green lettering reading 1947 REDSKIN. Inside, both are thick photographic records of campus life with class portrait sections, faculty and administration pages, organizations, athletics, and full-page campus photography, and the 1947 volume documents the postwar surge of returning GI students, including photographs of the temporary quonset and frame housing put up to hold them. The 1947 volume carries handwritten ink inscriptions on the endpapers and both books show honest age wear, detailed below. Companion lot to the 1935 and 1936 volumes offered separately in this sale. Description The 1937 Redskin - gray and black embossed board covers with maroon Art Deco lettering and a raised gilt campus-building medallion, gilt spine panels reading THE 1937 REDSKIN and OKLAHOMA A AND M COLLEGE - STILLWATER OKLAHOMA. Interior pages photographed include a Dedication page to Clarence Hamilton McElroy, referred to in the text as Dean Mac, with a facing tribute page citing twenty-eight years of service and his roles as Dean of Men and acting President; an In Memoriam spread for Benjamin Franklin Williams, listed as Professor of English, and Harry B. Cordell, listed as President of the State Board of Agriculture; a Women's Self Government page; and a Sophomores class opening page listing officers J. P. Bryan, President; Thomas Elliott, Vice-President; Ruth Walbert, Secretary-Treasurer. The 1947 Redskin - tan leatherette hardcover with green-printed seal reading AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL COLLEGE, STATE OF OKLAHOMA, 1891 and green lettering reading 1947 REDSKIN. Interior pages photographed include a script title page reading THE 1947 Redskin over an aerial campus photograph, a staff and colophon page crediting an editor, a business manager, and a general manager of publications along with engraving, printing, and photography firms, though the smaller names on that page are not fully legible in the photographs and are not transcribed here; a campus-life spread showing students outside corrugated temporary buildings; and a dense class portrait section with facing name keys. Each volume measures approximately 12 inches tall by roughly 9 to 9-1/2 inches wide per the tape-measure photographs. In the height photographs the tape is laid on top of the closed book and in the width photographs the hook plate is resting on the carpet beside the book rather than hooked on its edge, so all figures are close estimates. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Both are thick, heavy, sewn-and-cased hardbound volumes. Attribution note Oklahoma A&M College was founded at Stillwater in 1890 and renamed Oklahoma State University in 1957, a change reflected in later runs of this same yearbook series according to library cataloging records reproduced at the Internet Archive. The annual was published under the title The Redskin for roughly eighty years, a name the university has since retired and publicly addressed as reflecting the racial stereotyping of its era, as documented by the Stillwater History Museum. The 1947 volume falls in the postwar enrollment boom, when the GI Bill flooded land-grant campuses and colleges across the country put up surplus military and temporary housing to absorb the increase, which is consistent with the corrugated and frame buildings photographed in its campus section. The building on the 1937 cover medallion resembles Old Central, the 1894 building that is the oldest on the Stillwater campus, stated as an observation from the photograph rather than a caption reading.
