Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Marble No. 3 white beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a Marble's "U"-notch semi-buckhorn elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation and can be reversed to present a "V"-notch. The top tang is drilled and tapped with a folding tang sight installed, adjustable for elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with capped forend, straight grip, straight comb and steel crescent buttplate. The stocks have scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches with a few more notable dings. There is a notable crack at the left-rear of the forend toward the bottom. There are short cracks in the wrist at the left-front and the rear of the top tang with a tiny crack at the toe on the left. The LOP measures 12 7/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly gone to a nickel-like appearance, typical of Winchester's case hardening of this age, with some minor erosion around the edges at the heel and toe. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is light gray with sharp rifling. There is scattered light erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates about 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 65% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is scattered finish wear, most notable on the barrel extension, the round portions of the receiver, and on the magazine tube from disassembly/reassembly. Most worn areas have gone to a light patina and there are scattered spots of light oxidation. There are scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches with a few more notable dings on the left of the barrel extension. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. If the takedown lever is oriented to fit in its slot on the barrel, the barrel assembly has light play, the magazine can be tightened to remove the play, but the lever sits outside its notch. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-Fine condition as Antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Rifle made in 1896. Its 26" octagonal barrel is chambered for .38-55 and has been equipped with a new set of sights. The .38-55 WCF was originally developed by Ballard and could push a 250gr projectile at about 1,300 fps. This makes it a nice rifle for black bear and other similar sized game and has remained a somewhat popular cartridge, perhaps most due to the large number of Winchester rifles chambered for the round. The gun has fairly light wear given its age of 130 years and has likely served its previous owners well. It retains a decent bore and strong mechanics as well as the majority of its original metal finish. This early Winchester M1894 rifle may interest the Winchester collectors, but may also still be ready for a few more trips out in the field. Please see our photos and good luck!
