Three Hometown Cookbooks

THREE COOKBOOKS - GRACEMONT OKLAHOMA HOMETOWN FAVORITES, CHICKASHA RED HILLS MENNONITE COOKBOOK, AND FANNIE FLAGG'S WHISTLE STOP CAFE COOKBOOK Three cookbooks with strong local interest, two of them Oklahoma community fundraiser cookbooks published by Morris Press Cookbooks and one a national best-seller. The first is Hometown Favorites - Gracemont, Oklahoma, a comb-bound community cookbook copyright 2005, with a painted main-street scene of Gracemont on the cover showing the church steeple, frame houses, white picket fence, and a horse-drawn peddler's wagon. Recipes are credited by name to local cooks, and several are reprinted from older sources including the 1947 Caddo County H.D. Cookbook and the Gracemont H.D.C. Cookbook, 1934, which makes this book a local-history record as much as a recipe collection. The second is Country Cooking from the Red Hills, a collection of recipes by the Plainview Mennonite Congregation, Chickasha, OK 73018, copyright 2008, in a green vinyl three-ring binder with gold spine lettering and a colored-pencil farm and red-hills scene on the front. Recipes there are credited in the Mennonite style with both names, as Lynette, Mrs. Dustin Schmidt or Bernice, Mrs. Verlon Schmidt, running through wassails, teas, soups, and casseroles. The third is Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook, the Fawcett Columbine hardcover with its yellow pictorial dust jacket, featuring Fried Green Tomatoes, Southern barbecue, banana split pie, and more than 150 other recipes, illustrated throughout with vintage black-and-white cafe photography. Local buyers will recognize the Gracemont and Chickasha books immediately, and cookbooks tied to a specific Oklahoma town rarely come up for sale once the original print run is gone. Note that the green Red Hills binder shows scuffing and scratching over both vinyl covers, and a pink plastic tab bookmark is clipped into the Gracemont book. Sold as a lot of 3 books.
