BODHISATTVA HEAD. H:48cm (18.90in) H:28cm (11.02in) This is a fragmented head sculpture of Avalokite?vara Bodhisattva carved from yellow sandstone of Tang Dynasty. It wears a tall elaborate crown with intricate 3D flame scroll patterns, with remaining original red and green mineral pigment traces. Its layered hair texture is distinct and smooth, with urna on forehead. It has gentle round-square face, slender half-closed eyes, soft smooth eyebrow lines, straight nose and restrained peaceful lip lines, embodying tranquil merciful aura. It fully presents the graceful, rounded artistic charm of prosperous Tang Dynasty sculpture. The solid primitive sandstone body bears mild vicissitudinous stone texture, with naturally weathered original colored layers remaining after thousand-year erosion. Despite body fragmentary condition, it retains complete graceful facial spiritual charm. As a classic relic of grotto temple sculpture from Southwest China in Tang Dynasty, it owns outstanding value for space display and religious art collection.
