Spode Plate and Glass Dish

SPODE'S ROYAL JASMINE ROXBURY BASKETWEAVE PLATE MARKED COPELAND SPODE ENGLAND, WITH A PRESSED GLASS STAR-CUT ROUND DISH - TWO PIECES Two pieces. First, an English earthenware plate on a scalloped, fluted rim with an embossed basketweave band and a hand-colored garland border of pink and yellow roses, blue florets, and green foliage on a creamy ivory ground. The underside is marked in red "Spode's / 'Royal Jasmine' / England" with a second crest-style backstamp reading "COPELAND SPODE / ENGLAND / ROXBURY" and the pattern number "S 731." Second, a clear pressed glass round dish with a sawtooth or serrated rim, a band of stylized lotus or fan panels around the sides, and a bold star and fan cut-style pattern in the base, unmarked. Flaws include a small dark speck or firing inclusion in the well of the plate, light surface scratching and utensil wear inside the plate, faint gray specking in the ivory glaze, and dulling, scratching, and dust film on the glass dish with tiny rim nicks possible along the sawtooth points. UNTESTED - neither piece has been washed, tapped for ring, or examined under blacklight, and no assurance is given as to hairlines or crazing not visible in the photographs. Copeland, whose "Copeland Spode England" marks run roughly from the 1890s into the 1960s. The Spode ABC reference explains that Royal Jasmine is not a pattern but a pale creamy yellow glaze introduced in 1932, used mainly on Spode's ivory Imperial earthenware body to imitate early English creamware of the 1750s and 1760s, with each design given its own pattern number, and that the line ran through the 1950s before being discontinued after 1962 when changes to the earthenware body made it unsuitable for colored glazes. Roxbury with number S 731 is the design name here, and dated Royal Jasmine examples from the later 1930s through the 1950s are commonly seen, so a mid-twentieth-century date is reasonable. The glass dish is an American or European pressed pattern piece in the cut-glass manner, of a type made by many factories, and no maker or line is claimed. Notes for bidders Wash the plate by hand in lukewarm water with mild soap, never in a dishwasher, since hot detergent cycles fade hand-colored onglaze enamels and can drive water into any crazing. Skip abrasive pads and bleach soaks on the ivory glaze. Handle the glass dish by the body rather than the rim, and run a fingertip carefully around the sawtooth points before use to find nicks. Do not put either piece in a microwave or oven, and let glass reach room temperature before adding cold or hot contents.
