1978 NORMAN ROCKWELL "YANKEE DOODLE" COPPER-FINISH RELIEF COLLECTOR PLATE, CREATIVE WORLD, NO. 903 - APPROX 8 IN Round copper-finish collector plate with a deeply struck relief center scene after Norman Rockwell's "Yankee Doodle," showing the plumed rider on his pony with dogs at the hooves and a hitching post at right, framed by a stepped raised ring and a wide plain brushed rim. The relief is signed in the field "Norman Rockwell" and carries a second small sculptor's signature at lower right reading as "J. Bravo." The reverse is impressed "1978" over "No. 903" over "YANKEE DOODLE" with a globe logo lettered "Creative World" and a small " 1978." Flaws include a fine scratch line running across the reverse through the "1978" and "No. 903" lettering, light surface hazing and faint scuffing on the reverse rim, and a small dark speck near the lettering. There is no wall hanger, easel, box, or certificate with it, and the metal is UNTESTED with no claim made as to solid copper versus copper-plated base metal. Sold as one plate only. The Princeton University Art Museum catalogs the original as an oil on canvas of about 1937 measuring roughly 48 by 156 inches, signed by the artist at lower right and credited to Princeton University, and coverage from NJ.com, Town Topics, and the Nassau Inn itself describes it as Rockwell's largest mural, commissioned by Edgar Palmer to mark Princeton's role in the Revolution and still hanging above the bar. Creative World issued copper Rockwell collector plates in this period, and secondary-market listings from eBay, Etsy, and Worthpoint show 1978 "Yankee Doodle" copper plates of this type, some noting a sculptor named Roger Brown for the series; the relief signature visible on this example reads as "J. Bravo," and no series or sculptor attribution beyond the marks quoted above is claimed. Leave the finish alone; polishing will strip the darkened antiquing out of the relief recesses and flatten the contrast that makes the scene read, and it cannot be put back. Dust with a soft dry cloth, keep it dry to avoid spotting, and if it is hung, use a padded plate hanger that grips the rim rather than a wire type that can mar the edge.
