Excellent selection of a die-cast collectible airplane, perfect for any aircraft enthusiast. This direct model is the Lockheed 12A, also known as the “Electra Jr.”, and is the 3rd model release within the “Wings of Phillips 66” series. Introduced in 2011, it is a 1:32 scale replica that is also approx. 9” in length and holding a 12” wingspan. It includes a rotating propeller, movable wing and tail flaps, and holds dual purpose as a functioning coin bank. Comes complete in box with included original certificate of authenticity.
Produced by Ertl Collectables, “Wings of Phillips 66” is long-running series of die-cast models that commemorates the aviation history of the Phillips 66 Oil Company. Each model is a detailed replica of a real aircraft flown in Phillips 66’s corporate fleet. The series began production in 2010 and typically features real working rotating propellers and other details. Many also often hold dual purpose, also being a coin bank as well.
The model is based on the original Lockheed 12a which was a scaled-down version of a Lockheed 10 Electra (thus the “Electra Jr.”). Phillips owned model (the NC18970) was originally purchased by Phillips Petroleum in 1938 as a high-speed corporate transport for executives. During World War II, the aircraft was “drafted” into the U.S. Army Air Forces as a UC-40D or a lightweight utility transport for non-combat missions. After the war, the plane was returned to Phillips Petroleum and used until the 1950s. The aircraft was restored between 2009 and 2011 and currently is flown in major aviation events and air shows.
Item is still in original box with interior packing materials intact. Box has some minor denting but overall holds great presentation. Box measures 14” H x 11” W x 4” D.
