Description from HiBid
OVAL WALL MIRROR IN AN ORNATE GILT SCROLL AND FLORAL FRAME - HOLLYWOOD REGENCY LOOK, READY TO HANG
A handsome oval wall mirror in a deep gold-finished frame with a heavily ornamented border of scrolled acanthus leaves, shells, and floral sprigs running continuously around the oval, stepping in through a beaded and reeded inner band to a slim gilt lip at the glass. The finish is a warm antique gold with the raised ornament highlighted and the recesses darkened, giving it the traditional French or Hollywood Regency look that works over a console table, a dresser, a fireplace, an entry hall, or a powder room. The glass is clean and clear with good reflection. It was photographed hanging on the wall, so its proportion and presence in a room are easy to judge from the pictures. This is the second gilt wall mirror in this sale, and it pairs nicely with the tall vertical gold acanthus mirror offered separately, whether a buyer wants both for a matched hall grouping or just one. Items visible in the mirror's reflection, including the china cabinet, the framed art, and the wall border, are not part of this lot and are not included. Sold as one wall mirror.
Description
Oval wall mirror with a wide molded and gilt-finished frame, ornamented across its full face with scrolled acanthus leaf, shell, and flower motifs in relief.
Inner border steps down through a beaded band and a fine reeded or gadrooned band to a narrow gold lip that holds the glass.
Finish is a warm antique gold over molded composition or resin ornament on a wood or composite oval body, with the high points brightened and the recesses shaded to give depth. The frame material was not confirmed by handling; it is described from the photographs as molded composition or resin over a wood or composite body, and no material claim is guaranteed.
Mirror glass is a plain flat oval with no bevel visible in these photographs, clean and clear with true reflection and no visible desilvering, cloudiness, or black edge creep.
Overall outside frame dimensions measure approximately 24 inches tall by roughly 20 to 21 inches wide per the tape-measure photographs, with the visible glass opening running roughly 18 inches tall by 15 to 16 inches wide. In every measuring photograph the tape is held across the face of the mirror while the piece hangs on the wall, with the hook resting against the frame rather than hooked over its edge, and the camera is angled rather than square to the piece, so all figures here are close estimates rather than measurements. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs.
No maker mark, label, stamp, or tag is visible in these photographs, and the back of the mirror was not photographed, so the maker, country of origin, age, hanging hardware, and any backing labels are unknown and none are claimed.
The mirror was photographed in place on the wall. Hanging hardware is in use in the photographs but was not shown, inspected, or load-tested and is not guaranteed.
Attribution note
Oval mirrors in molded gilt scroll-and-floral frames of this pattern were produced in quantity from roughly the mid twentieth century onward for the traditional and French provincial decorating market, and they continue to be reproduced today, so the pattern alone does not establish an age. Without a maker's label, a foundry or importer stamp, or an examination of the back and the glass edges, there is no way to separate a mid-century example from a later reproduction. Nothing here should be read as a claim of antique age, of a particular maker or country of origin, or of carved wood construction. Any suggestion of period or style is offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and is not guaranteed. Bid on the item as pictured.
Condition
Used mirror in very good display condition, sold as-is. The gold finish looks even and rich in the photographs and the glass appears clean and clear with no visible crack, chip, or desilvering. Expect dust in the deep recesses of the ornament, which is normal and hard to avoid on a frame this heavily molded. Small chips, nicks, and rubbed spots in the molded ornament and along the outer edges should be expected on any piece of this construction, since composition and resin ornament breaks and flakes easily, and the darker shaded areas in these photographs can conceal small losses. Some areas of the finish show darker wear or oxidation, particularly along the outer edges of the ornament, visible in the close-up photographs. The frame was photographed only from the front while hanging, so the back, the mirror's edges, the retaining points or backing board, and the hanging hardware were not examined at all. The glass was not inspected in raking light for scratches, and the extent of any edge desilvering behind the frame lip is unknown. Photos are part of the description.
Notes for bidders
Clean the glass with a cloth dampened away from the mirror rather than spraying cleaner on the surface, since liquid running be
