VINTAGE BLACK LACE CHAPEL PRAYER CAP ON HAIR COMB WITH ORIGINAL PRINTED PACKAGE
Vintage black lace chapel head covering with its original printed package. The cap is a round rosette or star form of fine black net lace patterned with diamond panels and small floral medallions, edged in pointed scalloped tabs, gathered at the center and mounted to a clear plastic eight-tooth hair comb on the underside, with a black velvet bow trimming the top side. It comes with the original clear cellophane bag holding a printed paper insert card reading "POCKET SIZE", "HEAD COVERING", "FOR", "Chapel & Church" and "Lace Prayer Cap" in blackletter type, illustrated with two line-drawn profile portraits of women wearing lace head coverings. NO maker name, city, size or fiber content is printed on the card or found anywhere in these frames, so no maker is claimed. Condition is used with age: the bag is yellowed, brittle and creased with open edges, the paper card is toned, creased and chipped at the edges, the lace is dusty with clinging lint and carpet fiber, shows flattened storage folds and a few small pulls in the net, the velvet bow is slightly crushed with rubbed nap, and the comb shows yellowed glue or adhesive residue along its base with loose threads at the mount. The piece was NOT worn, tried on, washed, steamed or measured with a tape, and the bag was NOT opened out. Sold as one lace prayer cap with the package shown.

Attribution note
Small lace chapel caps of this kind were made for Christian women to cover the head in church, a practice codified for Latin Rite Catholics in the 1917 Code of Canon Law at canon 1262, which required women to have a covered head in church and was left out of the 1983 Code, ending the obligation, as Wikipedia's article on head covering for Christian women and the Archdiocese of Washington's pastoral blog both set out. Commentators note that American Catholic women wore hats far more than veils before
