Lot 487 Batch note: 30 files, and the filenames run in two separate numbering passes - a high pass (26, 27, 29, 30, then 37 through 46) and a low pass (2, 4, 6 through 9, 12 through 15, 17 through 20, 23, 25) - with several numbers skipped in each, so the file count does not match the frame numbers. All frames show the same two-piece set. Tape-measure frames are present for pitcher height, pitcher width, bowl width and bowl depth. 25-Character Title Ironstone Pitcher & Bowl (24) Alternates: Blue Rose Wash Bowl Set (23) Flow Blue Style Wash Set (24) Blue White Wash Set 2 Pc (24) HiBid DESCRIPTION TWO-PIECE IRONSTONE PITCHER AND WASH BOWL - COBALT BLUE ROSE TRANSFER, ROYAL ARMS MARK Two-piece blue and white ironstone wash set: a bulbous paneled ewer with a flared, ruffled cobalt spout, a scrolled cobalt handle with a raised thumb rest, and large blue rose-and-foliage transfer panels on a white ground, together with its matching square wash bowl having a heavily scalloped and molded cobalt rim, blue rose bouquet transfers inside and out, and a solid cobalt wash over the rim and shoulder. Both bases carry the same printed royal-arms device with lion and unicorn over "IRONSTONE / STAFFORDSHIRE / ENGLAND", with no maker or pattern name, so no maker is claimed. Flaws include fine overall crazing on both pieces, small nicks and glaze flakes along the molded bowl rim, scattered dark specks and light staining in the bowl interior, faint utensil-type marks, and scuffing and soiling on both foot rims. Neither piece has been tested for water tightness and no leak test was performed. Sold as a lot of 2 pieces - pitcher and bowl only. Description Form: paneled bulbous ewer with ruffled spout and scrolled handle; square wash bowl with scalloped, molded rim. Construction/Finish: white ironstone-type earthenware, underglaze blue rose transfers, brushed cobalt spout, handle and rim wash, high gloss glaze, unglazed foot rings. Marks: both pieces printed on the base with a royal-arms crest reading "IRONSTONE / STAFFORDSHIRE / ENGLAND"; a faint impressed or printed line inside the bowl below the rim is illegible in the photographs. No maker name or pattern name is visible, so none is claimed. Size: pitcher approximately 11 in tall and approximately 9 in across spout to handle, with about 7 in of handle reach, per the tape-measure photographs; bowl approximately 16 in across, up to roughly 17 to 18 in across the scalloped rim points, and approximately 5 in deep per tape. Attribution note Pitcher-and-bowl wash sets in cobalt transfer were a Staffordshire staple in the Victorian era, but a royal-arms mark carrying only the words "Ironstone", "Staffordshire" and "England" with no company or pattern name is characteristic of later twentieth-century revival ware rather than Victorian production. The Flow Blue International Collectors' Club notes that many later pieces are marked simply IRONSTONE / STAFFORDSHIRE / ENGLAND, and thepotteries.org records that Blakeney Pottery and similar producers used lion-and-unicorn arms of this type on Victorian-style blue and white earthenware, describing such wording as a fantasy mark rather than a historic maker's mark. Real Or Repro likewise notes that arms-style marks lacking a company or pattern name are usually of recent manufacture. That is why this set is described as ironstone-type revival ware in the Victorian taste and is not offered as antique flow blue. Notes for bidders Hand wash lukewarm with mild soap only, never in a dishwasher or with abrasives, and do not soak - crazed glaze absorbs water and stains. Lift the pitcher by the body rather than the handle, and carry the bowl with two hands under the base rather than by the rim. Keep both off hard edges and away from temperature swings, and use a felt pad if displaying on wood. Only the items pictured are included in this lot.
