Hyalyn Owl Trivet and 2 Sandstone Coasters

HYALYN PORCELAIN GREAT HORNED OWL TRIVET MARKED "hyalyn 507 USA" WITH TWO THIRSTYSTONE-STYLE SANDSTONE COASTERS - THREE PIECES Three pieces. First, a round white ceramic trivet with a detailed decal or transfer of a great horned owl perched on a branch with green leaves, backed in cork and marked in the cork "hyalyn / 507 / USA" with a metal-grommeted hanging hole and a partial paper remnant beside it. Second, a square sandstone coaster printed with a weathered white barnwood image and the copper-lettered motto "Faith / makes things possible... not easy," cork-backed with a retail label reading "THIRSTYSTONE / F9-BF8 / OCS Faith Makes Things Possible SINGLE" and a barcode. Third, a square sandstone coaster in pale aqua with a repeating blue and yellow tile-medallion pattern, cork-backed with a small round gold foil sticker that is not legible in the photographs. Flaws include a chipped and missing corner of cork on one square coaster, small dark spots, specks, and faint staining on the owl trivet face, gray marks and scuffs on the aqua coaster's printed face, edge wear and light chipping to the white glazed edges of both squares, cork soiling and adhesive residue on all three, and a partly torn paper remnant on the trivet's cork back. UNTESTED - none of the three has been used, washed, or heat-tested for the photographs, and no assurance is given as to how they perform under a hot dish or wet glass. Sold as a lot of three pieces. Leslie and Frances Johnson Moody, with production beginning in 1946 and the Moodys managing the company until Leslie Moody's death in 1973, according to the North Carolina Historic Preservation Office's Hickory survey and the NC State University Libraries finding aid for the company's photographs. Frances Moody coined the name from "hyaline," meaning glassy or translucent, and the firm made lamp bases, vases, ashtrays, planters, and tableware accessories at mid-range prices, working with designers including Eva Zeisel, Georges Briard, Michael Lax, Herbert Cohen, and Esta Brodey, as the Wisconsin Pottery Association and Carolina Arts have documented; ceramic production continued at the plant under successor names until 1997. The lowercase "hyalyn" spelling with a model number and "USA" in the cork is a standard company marking, and 507 is the mold or item number rather than a date. The lot's second piece is labeled Thirstystone, a sandstone coaster maker founded in 1989 that moved to Gainesville, Texas, and was later acquired by Cambridge Silversmiths and then Conimar Group, per Home Furnishings News and HomePage News reporting. Notes for bidders Sandstone coasters absorb by design, so keep them away from oils, wine, and coffee spills that soak in and stain permanently, and never soak them in water or run them through a dishwasher - blot and air dry instead. The cork backing lifts if it stays wet, which is how corners like the chipped one here come loose, and it can be reglued with a thin contact adhesive if you want to fix it. Treat the Hyalyn piece as a display or light-duty trivet rather than a hot-pan rest, since a heavy casserole concentrated on a thin disc can crack it and dry heat can scorch the cork.
