VINTAGE ADVERTISING SILHOUETTE PICTURE ON GLASS - MISSOURI VALLEY HATCHERY, MARSHALL, MISSOURI, NEWTON MFG. CO. FRAME Small framed advertising silhouette picture on glass. Black silhouettes of three mounted cowboys, a pack horse, a tall pine, and a rocky foreground are painted on the reverse of the glass over a soft color-printed background of snow-capped mountains, a lake, and green timber, so the figures read as shadows against the scene. A gilt-paper advertising label at the lower center is printed "The Trail of the Thrifty Buyer Leads to Better Values / GEORGE BAGBY, JR. / MISSOURI VALLEY HATCHERY / MARSHALL, MISSOURI." The frame is a thin gold-tone stamped metal molding with ribbed corner detail, and the paper backing is stamped "Made by NEWTON MFG. CO. NEWTON, IOWA" with a rusted metal tab hanger at the top. Flaws include heavy brown water staining and tidelines along the backing edges and bottom, scattered foxing spots, rust bleed from the hanger tab and around the backing edges, dust and dark specks trapped between the glass and the print, and wear and small paint losses on the frame molding with light rubbing to the printed label. The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles dates their heyday from the 1920s into the early 1960s, notes how cheaply they were produced for business giveaways with the sponsor's name printed at the bottom, and identifies Newton Mfg. of Newton, Iowa as one of the few firms that back-stamped its frames, which is what allows this example to be attributed. The Glass Encyclopedia and Michigan Questers material likewise describe Newton of Iowa as the main maker of the advertising promotional silhouettes, in thin metal frames with cardboard backing and a small metal hook. Newspaper coverage of the company records it as founded in 1909 by George Newton and notes it stopped making its own products after a 1943 plant fire, which places manufacture of pieces like this before that date. Missouri Valley Hatchery of Marshall, Missouri appears as a participating hatchery in USDA National Poultry Improvement Plan listings and in federal egg production test reports, consistent with a working commercial hatchery of the mid-twentieth century. Notes for bidders Do not attempt to open the frame or clean between the glass and the print; these were assembled as a sealed sandwich and the reverse-painted silhouette will lift or flake if the inner glass surface is touched or wetted. Clean the outer glass only, with a barely damp cloth kept away from the frame edges so no moisture wicks into the already-stained backing. Keep it out of direct sun and away from damp walls, since the paper backing has clearly taken moisture before.
