METLOX POPPYTRAIL SCULPTURED GRAPE CREAMER AND COVERED SUGAR A matched creamer and covered sugar bowl in the Sculptured Grape pattern by Metlox Poppytrail, California earthenware. Both are bulbous ring-turned forms with sculpted olive-brown twisted grapevine handles, the creamer with a wide pinched pouring spout and the sugar with a seated flat lid topped by a matching sculpted vine loop finial. Each is decorated with a single embossed hand-painted cluster of blue grapes, green and gray-green leaves, pale yellow blossom sprigs, and curling gold-brown tendrils on a clean off-white ground, with the reverse sides left plain white. These two are the brightest and best-presenting pieces from this consignor's Sculptured Grape group, showing far less wear than the plates. This is the same pattern as the cup and saucer sets, bread and butter plates, salad plates, shakers, and plates offered separately in this sale, so bidders assembling a service should watch those lots as well. Sold as a lot of two pieces plus the sugar lid. Description One creamer, bulbous with turned rings at the foot, a wide pinched spout, and an applied sculpted grapevine handle in olive-brown; interior plain glazed white. One covered sugar bowl with a matching ring-turned body, seated flat lid, and sculpted twisted-vine loop finial; interior plain glazed white. Creamer stands approximately 4 inches tall, a close estimate taken from the photographs. Sugar bowl stands approximately 4-1/2 inches tall to the top of the finial per the tape-measure photograph. The tape hook is standing on the table beside the bowl rather than hooked on the piece, so this is a close estimate only and bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. The creamer base is printed with a small number reading as "20" and the sugar bowl base with a small number reading as "30". No circular Poppytrail backstamp is visible on either base in the photographs, so no printed maker mark is claimed for these two pieces beyond the pattern match to the marked plates from the same estate. Attribution note Metlox Pottery operated in Manhattan Beach, California, founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty and his son Willis Prouty, first producing outdoor ceramic signs and then dinnerware under the Poppytrail name from the early 1930s until the plant closed in 1989. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs this pattern as Sculptured Grape by Metlox in the Poppytrail-Vernon line, discontinued, with production running roughly from 1963 to 1986, and describes it as raised blue grapes with green leaves and vines on a white ground. Related colorways exist, including an all-white version and a pink grape version, so buyers matching an existing service should compare colors closely against the photographs. Both pieces present clean and bright with strong color, noticeably better than the plates from the same grouping. Light surface scuffing and a few small dark specks are visible on the white ground. Faint kiln-pin marks and light tan tinting appear on the bases. The sugar lid seats in the gallery but has not been checked for a tight fit. Fine crazing may be present but is not clearly readable in the photographs, so none is claimed either way. No cracks, chips, or repairs are apparent in the photographs, but the pieces have not been examined under magnification and no such guarantee is made. Photos are part of the description. Notes for bidders Glazed earthenware is not dishwasher or microwave recommended; hand wash gently in warm water and dry promptly. Do not soak, as moisture can enter any glaze lines and stain the body. Lift the sugar by the body rather than the lid finial, and handle the sculpted vine handles carefully as they are the most vulnerable points on both pieces.
