FOSTORIA AMERICAN CLEAR - CUBIST PEDESTAL JAM/JELLY DISH WITH LID, PATTERN NO. 2056 A very collectible Fostoria American Clear pedestal jam/jelly dish with its original matching lid, in the iconic Cubist or cube-block pattern, No. 2056. The footed bowl carries the pattern's signature sawtooth scalloped rim and sits on a paneled hexagonal stem above a plain flared disc foot, topped by a domed cover with a faceted cube finial. Heavy, brilliant, colorless pressed glass with deep crisp mold work that catches light beautifully from every angle. Perfect for jam, jelly, honey, candy, nuts, or mints on the table or sideboard, and equally at home displayed empty as a bright decorative accent. American is Fostoria's best-known and longest-running line, and complete lidded pieces with their original covers are the ones collectors chase. Sold as one two-piece set: dish and matching lid. Description Maker and pattern: Fostoria Glass Company, American Clear, line No. 2056, also called the Cubist pattern. Form: covered pedestal jam/jelly dish, sometimes cataloged as a jelly and cover or footed candy; sawtooth scalloped rim, paneled hexagonal stem, plain round flared foot, domed lid with faceted cube finial. Height: approximately 6-3/4" to 7" tall overall with the lid in place per the tape-measure photos. Bowl rim diameter: approximately 4-3/4" to 5" across per the tape-measure photos. Pattern detail: raised three-dimensional cube or block motif across the bowl exterior, bowl interior, and the full lid; plain polished stem and foot. Marks: no maker's mark, backstamp, acid stamp, or paper label is present, which is normal and expected for Fostoria American, as the line was not marked. Bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs. Attribution note Fostoria's American pattern, line No. 2056, was introduced in 1915 and produced until the factory closed in 1982, making it Fostoria's leading seller and one of the most widely collected American glass patterns ever made. The pattern is cataloged by Replacements, Ltd. as "Stem 2056, Cube Motif," and the covered pedestal jam/jelly form in this size is a documented American shape, generally listed at 6-3/4" tall and produced in the mid-century period. Collectors also know the design as Cubist, Cube, or Zig Zag Block. Be aware that similar cube-pattern covered compotes were also made by Indiana Glass in its Whitehall line and by Jeannette Glass in Cube, and the three lines are routinely confused; the hexagonal paneled stem, the crisp sawtooth rim, and the overall weight and clarity on this example are consistent with Fostoria American.
