Lot 498 Batch note: 24 files, on-screen numbering running one ahead of the filenames with the opening frame landing last in the sequence, so nothing is missing. Tape frames cover the lamp height and the chimney, and the shade's ruffled top opening; the full outside diameter of the shade and the base width were not taped and are estimates. Two frames show the signature inside the shade rim from slightly different angles. The domed shade has a crimped ruffled top rim and sits in a pierced brass-tone gallery ring above a matching painted melon-form font, on a heavy cast gilt-metal footed base with scroll, bead and lion-mask relief; a frosted-and-clear glass chimney rises through the shade opening, held in a pierced brass burner-form collar with a decorative dummy key. The inside rim of the shade is signed in script "Fenton / Hand Painted by C. Mackey" - the surname reads as Mackey and the reading is offered as an interpretation of the photographs. Flaws include worn, darkened and rubbed gilding on the cast base with dark tarnish in the recesses, what appears to be a fine crack or casting line at the base collar, dust and shadowing on the interior of the shade, dust and haze inside the chimney, tarnish on the brass gallery and ring, and a tightly wrapped older white cord with an old two-blade plug. The lamp is shown lit, but the wiring, socket, switch, cord and plug are UNTESTED for safety, and the glass is UNTESTED under raking light. Sold as one lamp with shade and chimney. Description Form: Gone-With-The-Wind or parlor-style three-piece electric lamp - ruffled dome shade, pierced gallery ring, painted glass font, cast metal footed base, glass chimney in a burner-form collar. Construction/Finish: hand-blown custard satin glass with hand-painted enamel daisies, satin acid finish, brass-tone pierced gallery and shade ring, gilt cast-metal base, frosted and clear glass chimney, white cloth-look cord with a two-blade plug. Marks: signed inside the shade rim in gold script "Fenton / Hand Painted by C. Mackey"; no other mark, sticker or model number is visible on the font, base or hardware in these photographs. Size: approximately 21 to 22 in tall overall to the top of the chimney per the tape-measure photographs, with the ruffled top opening of the shade taping at approximately 6 in. The outside diameter of the shade is estimated at roughly 10 in and the cast base at roughly 6 in square Attribution note The signature identifies this as Fenton Art Glass of Williamstown, West Virginia. Fenton's hand-painted decorating department, begun in the late 1960s, had its artists sign each piece - full names at first, later a first initial and surname - and published decorator rosters from the National Fenton Glass Society and the Fenton Fanatics reference list both include a decorator signing as C. Mackey, recorded as Cathryn (Cathy) D. Mackey with Fenton employment beginning in 1978. The daisy-on-custard decoration matches Fenton's Daisies on Custard line, which Replacements dates to 1975 through 1981, and Fenton cataloged student and parlor lamps in that pattern, including a 19 in Daisies on Custard student lamp listed by glass dealers as ware number 9308 for 1976 through 1981. Custard glass of this period is uranium-bearing and collectors report it fluorescing under ultraviolet light, but no black-light test was performed here. The exact ware number of this lamp is not confirmed and the surname in the signature is read from photographs. Notes for bidders Have the lamp rewired before regular use, since the original cord and unpolarized plug are past their service life and the job is inexpensive. Remove the chimney and lift the shade out of the gallery ring separately before moving the lamp, and carry the base with two hands rather than lifting by the shade or the ring. Wash the painted glass by hand in lukewarm water with a soft cloth, never in a dishwasher and never with abrasives, because hand-applied Fenton enamel and the satin acid finish both scuff. Clean the gilt cast base dry with a soft brush only, as polishes strip the gold finish. Only the items pictured are included in this lot.
