He is most famous for the cotton gin which had a profound effect on the American economy in the early 19th century, particularly in the South, but he also was heavily involved in the firearms industry. This “Rare”1858 .36 Cal Navy & Eagle 2nd Gen 4th Type revolver is a Whitney Co. percussion revolver that entered production in 1858 and was discontinued in the late 1860s. The gun was among the first generation of practical solid frame revolvers, it was an early competitor to Colt which had just lost its Master patent in 1857 which had allowed Samuel Colt to dominate the revolver market. Although not nearly as well known as the Colt and Remington revolvers that were used during the Civil War, the Whitney Co. revolver was pressed into service during the conflict. This particular example has no visible government acceptance marks, so there is no way to know for sure if it was employed during the war. Made just prior to and during the Civil War, this .36 caliber 6 shooter was one of the first successful solid frame revolvers and was heavily utilized by both Union and Confederate troops. The left and right side of the barrel are stamped with a “B”. The trigger guard is stamped “B”. The bottom of the barrel is stamped “15668X” which is the serial number. The ramming rod and cylinder pin are stamped “15668X”. The frame under the trigger guard is stamped “15668KE”. The back of the 6 shot cylinder is stamped 15668. The top of the brass trigger guard under the frame is stamped “15668KE”. On the inside of both black walnut grip panels is stamped “15668KE as well. As you now know, this is an “All Matching Number Revolver”. It has a 7.5” octagonal barrel, and a brass post front and rear notch sights. The grips have some light handling marks, nicks and a chip on the right rear bottom tip. Very nice condition for an American Historic Antique Revolver. Please see photos. No FFL Needed.
