Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded, beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a "V"-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none present).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with an “S” shaped pistol grip, capped beavertail forearm, and a flat hard rubber serrated buttplate. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear with well defined serrations. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good-plus condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color
Finish Originality: Original. The barreled portion of the receiver is marked "22" on the interior at the rear, the buttstock's top tang inlet is stamped "922".
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is infrequent minor erosion and a little stubborn fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8+/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered light marks and infrequent spots of faint oxidation. There is a spot of wear on the right of the barrel over the forend. There is some muting on the top tang. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Marlin's original rimfire lever action, the Model 1891, was invented by L.L. Hepburn and soon developed into the model 1892. The later Model 1897 was essentially the same, but with a takedown action. These early models were produced until WWI demand saw most production go to machine guns. After the war, sporting arms came back and the 1922 catalog listed their .22 lever action as the Model 39. In 1939, the model was updated with a longer forend and round barrel, incorporating an earlier improvement such that the model could use high velocity ammunition, resulting in the Model 39A. For decades, this model stayed in production with a number of different variations along the way.
This example is among the earliest of the 39A Models, serial 922. It has early features such as the "S"-profile pistol grip, case hardened receiver, and flat buttplate. Before long, the grip would go to a capped, flat-bottom and the buttplate would be slightly curved. Once again, a world war interrupted production, and beginning in 1945, all of the receivers would be blued. In quite outstanding condition given its age and the typical hard use these rifles see, this very early 39A will take a prized place in even advanced Marlin collections.
