LIKE NEW IN BOX — COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY (.44-40)
Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver chambered in the classic .44-40 Winchester cartridge, featuring the highly desirable 4¾" barrel configuration, finished in deep Colt factory bluing with color case-hardened frame, and fitted with factory walnut grips bearing gold Colt Rampant medallions. This revolver is presented in exceptional like-new condition and comes complete with its original serialized Colt factory cardboard box and the original Colt paperwork and factory letters that were included with the revolver when new.
Serial number SA72050 places this revolver in the Third Generation Colt Single Action Army production, manufactured in 1979 during the early years of the Third Generation run when Colt returned the Peacemaker to production after the Bicentennial era. Revolvers from this period are well known for their excellent polish and finishing quality, and they remain highly desirable among collectors today.
Configuration & Condition
This example features the 4¾-inch barrel, often called the “Civilian” or “Gunfighter” configuration, historically prized for its balance and quick handling. The revolver retains virtually all of its original factory finish, with the deep Colt blue showing a rich, mirror-like sheen. The case-hardened frame displays strong original color, and the factory walnut grips remain excellent with crisp checkering and intact gold Colt medallions.
The bore is bright with strong rifling, the action remains tight with proper lockup, and the revolver appears to have been very lightly handled since leaving the factory.
Factory Packaging
This revolver includes:
• Original Colt serialized factory cardboard box
• Original Colt factory paperwork and literature included when new
Having the matching serialized factory box and original Colt documentation significantly increases collector interest, as many examples have long since been separated from their original packaging.
Historical Context
The Colt Single Action Army, introduced in 1873, remains one of the most famous revolvers ever produced and is forever associated with the American frontier. The .44-40 Winchester chambering is one of the most historically correct and desirable calibers for the SAA, as it allowed early owners to use the same ammunition in both revolvers and Winchester rifles.
Third Generation SAAs from the late 1970s era are particularly appreciated for their traditional construction and Colt craftsmanship, making them excellent collector pieces when preserved in high condition like this example.
Collectability
Key collector attributes present in this revolver include:
• Desirable .44-40 chambering
• Popular 4¾" barrel length
• Excellent original condition
• Matching serialized Colt factory box
