SMALL CARVED STONE TRINKET DISH - GREEN AND CREAM VEINED STONE WITH FELTED BASE Small round hand-turned stone dish with a heavy rolled rim and a shallow recessed well, cut from a cream and pale grey stone shot through with deep green and warm tan veining that swirls around the rim and across the well. The interior shows concentric lathe rings from turning, and the underside is fully covered with teal-green felt. The full underside is felted, so any maker mark, country-of-origin stamp, or label that may once have been present is hidden or gone - no maker mark is visible, so none is claimed. Flaws include a rough, chipped, and dulled area along one section of the rim edge, scattered nicks and pale bruised spots on the rim and outer wall, mineral pitting and dark specks in the stone, general dulling of the polish with a chalky look across the well, and felt on the base that is faded, rubbed thin, and lifting slightly at the edge with a lighter worn patch at the center. The stone type is UNTESTED - it reads as alabaster, marble, or a related veined stone in the photographs, but no identification is claimed. There are no cigarette rests, so this is offered as a trinket, coin, or ring dish rather than as an ashtray. Sold as one dish only. Attribution note Small turned stone dishes of this kind - cream and green veined stone, heavy rolled rim, felted underside - were produced in quantity through the mid and later twentieth century as souvenir and gift-shop ware, most familiarly the alabaster and marble trinket dishes and ashtrays exported from Italy and Mexico and the harder banded stone goods sold as "onyx." Veined green-and-cream alabaster and dyed banded stone were both common in that trade, and pieces were often marked only with a paper sticker under the felt, which is why so many surviving examples now show no mark at all. Do not soak it, run it through a dishwasher, or use vinegar, bleach, or any acidic or abrasive cleaner - those will etch and dull the surface permanently. Dust it dry, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately, keeping water away from the felt so it does not stain or release. Avoid oils, perfumes, jewelry cleaners, and candle wax, which soak into the stone and leave dark rings.
