TWO ANCHOR HOCKING CLEAR GLASS MEASURING CUPS - 4 CUP / 1 QUART AND 1 CUP / 8 OZ, RED PRINTED SCALES
A practical pair of clear glass measuring cups by Anchor Hocking, both with the familiar red printed measurement scales, applied glass handles, and pinched pour spouts, and both carrying the printed ANCHOR HOCKING name with the anchor-in-H logo on the side. The larger is the 4 cup, 1 quart size, marked in CUPS, OUNCES, QUART, and MILLILITRES up to 1 LITRE, with a wide open mouth and a heavy base. The smaller is the classic 1 cup, 8 ounce size, marked in 1 CUP, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1 PINT references, ounces, and 250ml metric, with a molded base reading in raised letters something to the effect of FOR COOKING, USE OVEN and additional raised wording. Both are the tempered clear glass type intended for kitchen use rather than decorative pieces, and both are still fully usable. Together they cover the two sizes a cook reaches for most. Bidders should read the condition notes, since printed red scales on glass measuring cups fade with dishwasher use and that fading is difficult to judge from photographs. Sold as a lot of two measuring cups.
Description
Large measuring cup - Anchor Hocking clear glass, 4 cup / 1 quart capacity, straight-tapered body with a wide mouth, a pinched pour spout, and a thick applied loop handle. Red printed graduations on multiple columns reading 4 CUPS, 3 CUPS, 2 CUPS, 1 CUP with half and third marks, 32oz, 28oz, 24oz, 20oz, 16oz, 12oz, 8oz, a 1 Quart marking, third-cup fractions, and a metric column reading 1 LITRE, 900, 800, 700, 600, 500ml, 400, 300, 200, 100. The side carries the anchor-in-H logo above ANCHOR HOCKING in red block letters. Additional small red printed wording appears near the rim on the reverse. Stands approximately 5-1/2 to 6 inches tall and measures approximately 7 to 7-1/2 inches across including the handle and spout, per the tape-measure photographs, in which the tape is stood on the table beside the piece and laid across the top rather than fixed to it, so both figures are close estimates.
Small measuring cup - Anchor Hocking clear glass, 1 cup / 8 ounce capacity, same general form with a pinched spout and applied loop handle. Red printed graduations reading 1 CUP, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, a 1 PINT reference, 8oz and ounce marks, third-cup fractions, and a metric column reading 250ml, 200, 150, 100, 50. The side carries the anchor-in-H logo above ANCHOR HOCKING in red block letters. The underside is molded in raised glass lettering that reads in part FOR COOKING, USE OVEN and further raised wording around the base rim that is only partly legible in the photograph, so it is not transcribed in full here. Stands approximately 3 to 3-1/2 inches tall per the tape-measure photograph, in which the tape is stood on the table beside the piece rather than fixed to it, so the height is a close estimate.
Both pieces are colorless clear glass with red printed decoration only, no color tinting, and no chips, cracks, or repairs visible at the resolution shown.
Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs.
Attribution note
Anchor Hocking is an American glass manufacturer based in Lancaster, Ohio, formed in 1937 by the merger of the Hocking Glass Company with the Anchor Cap and Closure Corporation, and the anchor-in-H trademark shown on both of these pieces is its long-running mark. Clear tempered glass measuring cups of this form, with red printed scales and an applied handle, have been an Anchor Hocking kitchen staple for decades and remained in production over a long span, so the printed logo style, the metric columns, and the molded base wording are the practical clues to age rather than the shape. Both cups carry metric millilitre scales, which points away from the earliest examples, but no production date, mold number, or period is claimed or guaranteed for either piece. All identification here is read from the printing and molding visible in these photographs and is offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and is not guaranteed. Bid on the item(s) as pictured.
Condition
Used clear glass kitchen measuring cups in good usable condition, sold as-is. Both look clear and bright in the photographs with no cracks, chips, or cloudiness visible at the resolution shown, and both handles appear sound and firmly attached. The red printed graduations show wear on both pieces, with letters and numbers thinned, faded, or partly rubbed away in places, most noticeably on the ANCHOR HOCKING lettering and on some of the cup markings, which is normal on dishwasher-washed measuring cups. Rims, spouts, and handle joints were not run under a finger for chips, flakes, or nicks, and neither piece was tapped or held to strong light for hairlines or stress cracks, so bidders should assume small flaws are possible. Expect fine utensil scratching on the interiors, ring wear on the bases, and some degree of dishwasher haze or interior water filming, none of which photographs reliably on cl
