Homer Civil War Wood Engraving, a Moonlit Coastal Fort Oil Painting, and a Winter Landscape signed Pearl Brown. This lot features framed artworks of varying subjects and media. The first is a relief wood engraving after Winslow Homer (1836-1910) titled A Bayonet Charge from the series The War for the Union, 1862. This print was published in the August 12, 1862 issue of Harpers Weekly and is signed in the block HOMER at the lower left. The print shows a well-defined impression with no plate marks, consistent with the mass-production relief techniques used for period newsprint. It is housed in a black and gilt wood frame with a label for Closson Galleries, Cincinnati, on the reverse. The second work is an oil painting on board depicting a coastal fortress with circular towers under a moonlit sky. The painting uses impasto and possibly shell or mineral inclusions to create texture on the stone walls, and depicts a naval vessel resembling a Civil War era ironclad in the harbor. It is set in an ornate gilded gesso and wood frame. The third piece is a winter landscape on paper signed and dated PEARL BROWN. JAN. 1, 1915. The composition shows a hunter and two dogs returning to a log cabin in a snowy setting with gnarled trees. The work is presented in a flame-grained wood frame.
