Carved Catlinite Artifacts. This assortment of Native American stone artifacts and decorative objects includes both utilitarian ground stone tools and carved ceremonial items. A primary piece in the collection is a large, curved ground stone scraper or hide-fleshing tool made from a dark green fine-grained stone. This item bears an adhesive label from Alexandria Antiques identifying it as a scraper from Coshocton County, Ohio. The collection also features a hand-carved two-piece pipe assembly made from red catlinite. The pipe bowl has a square-profile chamber and a textured exterior, while the separate stem or handle features deep spiral-carved grooves and a square socket end. notched or waisted stones are included, typically used as net sinkers or bolas, made from natural river cobbles with pecked indentations. A group of large ground stone tools are present, including hammerstones with pitted ends and manos or pestles with smoothed faces. Additionally, the group contains a small lithic projectile point mounted to a wooden shaft decorated with pink and blue pigment bands and secured with cordage.
