FOUR VINTAGE GREEN TRANSFER SOUVENIR PLATES - HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA, HISTORIC ROUTE 40 ILLINOIS, MEMPHIS TENNESSEE, SCENIC SOUTH DAKOTA A nice grouping of four vintage souvenir plates, all printed in the same deep forest green transfer on white bodies, so they display beautifully together on a wall rack, a plate rail, a hutch, or a shelf even though they come from three different makers. Two are the busy multi-vignette state and city designs that souvenir collectors chase, one is a detailed historic highway plate with a full descriptive history printed on the back, and one is a clean English Staffordshire Canadian scene plate with a maple leaf border. Subjects are the Old Town Clock, Halifax, Nova Scotia from the Collector's Series of Atlantic Canada by Wood & Sons of Staffordshire England, On Historic Route 40 in Illinois, The Old National Road by Kettlesprings Kilns of Alliance, Ohio, Memphis, Tenn., Home of the Cotton Carnival, and Scenic South Dakota. Each runs roughly nine and a half to ten and a half inches across. The two state and city plates carry no visible maker mark on the back, so those two are not attributed. Good travel-nostalgia, state-collector, and Route 40 highway-collector material, and they cross-sell well with the other collectible glass and china in this sale. Bidders should read the condition notes below, since these were examined only from the photographs and small rim chips, scratches, and utensil wear are common on plates of this age. Description Old Town Clock, Halifax, Nova Scotia - round dinner-size plate, white body with a green transfer central scene of the domed octagonal Old Town Clock tower above the Halifax rooftops and harbor, captioned in the image OLD TOWN CLOCK / HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA., with a small shield crest at the top of the rim and a border of green maple leaves and blossoms. Back is printed with a green circular mark reading THE COLLECTOR'S SERIES OF ATLANTIC CANADA, with a lighthouse device at center, and beneath it THIS SCENE IS ONE OF A SERIES MADE IN STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND BY WOOD & SONS. LOUIS, COLLINSVILLE, HIGHLAND, GREENVILLE, VANDALIA 1819-1839, EFFINGHAM, ALTAMONT, CASEY, MARSHALL, and a U.S. 40 highway shield, ringed by twelve captioned vignettes including CAHOKIA COURTHOUSE NEAR RT. 40 CAHOKIA, BLOODY ISLAND EAST ST. LOUIS, COAL MINING TROY, CAHOKIA MOUNDS ST. CLAIR CO., GEO. ROGERS CLARK, MADONNA OF THE TRAIL VANDALIA, GREENVILLE COLLEGE GREENVILLE, and others, with a banner across the bottom reading ON HISTORIC ROUTE 40 IN ILLINOIS / THE OLD NATIONAL ROAD flanking the SEAL OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, AUGUST 26, 1818.
