The small engraved script at the lower right of the rectangular block does not resolve even enlarged. First is a heavy pressed clear glass owl figurine or bookend with an ice-textured body, frosted face discs, breast feathering and tufted ears, keeping its original silver foil ship-and-name sticker reading "VIKING / HAND MADE" on the face. Second is a two-piece frosted satin glass owl fairy lamp or votive holder - a footed bowl base with molded feathering and a domed owl-head shade with large ringed eyes, hooked beak and ear tufts. Third is an oval clear glass paperweight with a deeply frosted intaglio scene of a horned owl perched on a branch beside a bare twig. Fourth is a rectangular clear glass block with a finely detailed frosted intaglio of an owl in a budding tree over grass tufts, with small engraved script at the lower right that is not legible in these photographs. Flaws include candle wax and dark soot residue inside the fairy lamp base, dust and grime settled in the frosted recesses of all four pieces, light surface scratches and handling marks on the flat polished faces, and slight rubbing to the Viking foil sticker. Glass condition is UNTESTED under raking light. Sold as a lot of four glass owl pieces. Description Form: pressed clear glass owl figurine or bookend; two-piece frosted owl fairy lamp with a footed base and a removable head shade; oval intaglio-etched clear paperweight; rectangular intaglio-etched clear block. Construction/Finish: molded and pressed clear glass with frosted and satin-finished detail, deeply sand-carved or intaglio-etched decoration on the two flat pieces, polished sides with ground bases. Marks: the figurine keeps a silver foil label reading "VIKING / HAND MADE" with a ship device; the rectangular block carries a small engraved script mark at the lower right that is not legible in these photographs; the fairy lamp and the oval paperweight show no visible mark or label, so no maker is claimed for them. Size: no tape frame was shot, so all figures are estimates - the figurine is roughly 5 in tall, the fairy lamp roughly 4 in tall and roughly 3 in in diameter, the oval paperweight roughly 4 in across by 1 in thick, and the rectangular block roughly 4 in wide by 3 in tall by 1 in thick. Attribution note The foil label identifies the figurine as Viking Glass, the New Martinsville, West Virginia factory renamed Viking Glass Company in 1944, which produced pressed animal figurines, paperweights and bookends into the 1980s. Collector references including the Journal of Antiques, LoveToKnow and Viking-specialist sites all note Viking used paper and foil labels rather than molded marks, so a surviving sticker like this one is the usual basis for attribution. Viking also cataloged owl fairy lamps, with a 7 in owl Glimmer fairy lamp introduced in its 1970 catalog in crystal and frosted colors per Viking Art Glass and depression-glass gallery listings; the frosted owl lamp here is noticeably smaller than that model, and Westmoreland made satin glass owl fairy lamps as well, so this piece is not assigned to a maker. Deeply sand-carved intaglio owl paperweights and blocks of this type were made by several European and Asian workshops and sold through gift and mail-order channels, and without a readable signature no maker is claimed. Notes for bidders Hand wash glass in lukewarm water with mild soap, never in a dishwasher, since satin and frosted surfaces hold detergent film and thermal shock cracks heavy pressed glass. Soften the wax in the fairy lamp base in warm water rather than scraping it, and use a soft brush on the frosted recesses. Leave the foil label alone - moisture and cleaner lift it, and the label is what carries the attribution. Carry each piece separately and set them down on cloth, since ground bases chip against hard surfaces. Only the items pictured are included in this lot.
