AIR OF WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS BIOGRAPHICAL VOLUMES - 1984 JUNIOR COLLEGES AND 1987 UNIVERSITIES & COLLEGES, RANDALL PUBLISHING, TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA
Offered here is a matched-style pair of large hardbound biographical annuals from the long-running Who's Who Among Students series, published by Randall Publishing Company of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The first is a burgundy-red volume titled WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN JUNIOR COLLEGES 1984, identified inside as The Eighteenth Edition; the second is a navy blue volume titled WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES & COLLEGES 1987, identified inside as The 53rd Volume. Both are thick, heavy reference books bound in textured leatherette-look boards with gilt-stamped rule borders on the front covers and gilt lettering on the spines, each spine also carrying the publisher's stylized flaming-lamp-of-knowledge device. The interiors are set in dense multi-column type, each entry giving a student's name, home town and state, college, birth date, parents, degree, honors, activities, and employment - the kind of granular local detail that makes these volumes useful to genealogists, class historians, small-town researchers, and anyone tracing an Oklahoma or regional family through the mid-1980s. Books of this type are also bought simply as decorator volumes: the deep red and deep navy bindings with gold tooling stack and shelve handsomely in an office, library, or staged bookcase. Both volumes present as clean, tight, and complete from the photographs, with only light shelf and handling wear noted below. Bidders following the paper and book lots in this sale should also review the cookbook, recipe file, and framed art lots offered nearby. Sold as a lot of 2 books, as pictured.
Description
Volume 1 - burgundy/red board: front cover gilt-stamped within a double gilt rule frame, "WHO'S WHO / AMONG STUDENTS IN / AMERICAN JUNIOR COLLEGES / 1984"; spine reads "WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN JUNIOR COLLEGES 1984" with the flaming-lamp emblem at the tail.
Title page of the red volume reads "Who's Who Among Students In American Junior Colleges 1984 / The Eighteenth Edition / A biographical dictionary of outstanding men and women in American Junior Colleges / RANDALL PUBLISHING COMPANY / 3200 Rice Mine Road, N.E. / Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35406".
Red volume endpapers are plain matte red stock, clean and unmarked in the photographs; text block is white to off-white with clean margins.
Interior sample page photographed is page 133, showing alphabetical entries in the F surnames (Fudge, Fuemmerer, Fuentes, Fugate, Fugitt, Fulcher, Fulkerson, Fuller, Fulop, Fulton, Fultz, Funk, Fuqua, Furber, Furnari, Fusco and others) with college, home town, birth date, parents, degree, and activity abbreviations.
Volume 2 - navy blue board: front cover gilt-stamped within a double gilt rule frame, "WHO'S WHO / AMONG STUDENTS IN / AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES / & COLLEGES / 1987"; spine reads "WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES & COLLEGES 1987" with the same flaming-lamp emblem.
Title page of the blue volume reads "WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES & COLLEGES 1987 / The 53rd Volume / A biographical compilation of the year's most outstanding men and women in American Universities and Colleges / RANDALL PUBLISHING COMPANY / 3200 Rice Mine Road, N.E. / Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35406". A partially visible staff page opposite lists "PETTUS RANDALL, Director" and additional editorial staff names.
Blue volume endpapers are plain gray-blue stock, clean in the photographs; interior sample spreads photographed include the Fitzgerald-Fleck run and the Savage-Seeley run, again in dense multi-column biographical format.
Both volumes are the same trim size. Width across the front cover measures approximately 8-1/2 in per the tape-measure photographs; note that in both width shots the tape hook is set against the outer board edge but the tape body lies flat on top of the cover, and the tape runs off past the far edge of the frame, so the width figure is a close estimate.
Height: the vertical tape photographs run down the covers and continue past the 9-inch mark with the lower edge of the book still outside the frame, so the height is a close estimate only - roughly 11 in - and cannot be read exactly from these photographs.
Thickness: the close-up tape shot against the text block of the blue volume reads a little over 2 in with the tape hook resting on the carpet rather than hooked on the book, so this is a close estimate. The red junior-college volume is visibly the thinner of the two in the stacked photograph.
No dust jackets are present with either volume; none is shown and none is claimed. No ISBN, price, or ownership bookplate is visible in the photographs supplied.
Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs.
