PAIR OF WELCH'S DISNEY JELLY JAR GLASSES - THE SPIRIT OF MICKEY, "A FRIEND IN NEED" #1
Two matching Welch's jelly jar collector glasses from the Disney Video Favorites promotion for Walt Disney's "The Spirit of Mickey." Each is the familiar small barrel-form jelly jar with a rolled lid rim, tapered body, and beaded pressed base, decorated in bright fired-on color. The front scene shows Mickey Mouse in his red shorts crouched in the snow beside Pluto, who wears a mountain-rescue keg and cap in the alpine climbing gag, set against a pale blue and white snow panel with "Welch's " across the blue band beneath. The reverse of each jar carries the full promotional graphic reading "Disney VIDEO FAVORITES / Walt Disney's THE SPIRIT OF MICKEY / OWN IT ON VIDEO!" with a Mickey-ears numeral "1" beside the scene title "A FRIEND IN NEED" and the line "COLLECT ALL 6 FUN SCENES!" A colorful pair for a Disneyana or character-glass collection, a nineties nostalgia shelf, or juice glasses for grandkids. Both are the same jar number, so this is a matched pair rather than two different scenes. Sold as a lot of two jars.
Description
Two clear pressed-glass Welch's jelly jar glasses, barrel form with rolled jar rim and beaded base ring.
Each measures approximately 4 to 4-1/4 inches tall and approximately 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches across the rim per the tape-measure photographs. In the height photograph the tape hook plate is standing on the tabletop beside the jar rather than hooked on the piece, and in the diameter photograph the tape body is laid across the top of the rim, so both figures are close estimates. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Jars in this series are commonly listed at 6 ounces.
Front decoration: Mickey Mouse and Pluto in a snow scene, blue and white panel, "Welch's " on a light blue band.
Reverse decoration: "Disney VIDEO FAVORITES", "Walt Disney's THE SPIRIT OF MICKEY", "OWN IT ON VIDEO!", Mickey-ears "1", "A FRIEND IN NEED", "COLLECT ALL 6 FUN SCENES!", and "Welch's ".
Bases are clear with faint pressed lettering and a beaded ring; the base text is not legible in the photographs, so no glass maker is claimed.
Both jars are number 1 of the six-jar series. No lids are included.
Attribution note
Welch's has used character-decorated jelly jars as reusable drinking glasses since the Flintstones promotions of the 1960s, a practice noted in general reference coverage of the company, and the Disney Video Favorites jars belong to that long-running series. "The Spirit of Mickey" was an animated anthology released direct to video by Walt Disney Home Video on July 14, 1998 according to Wikipedia and IMDb, and collector listings on Etsy, eBay, Poshmark, and PicClick consistently date the matching Welch's jar series to 1998, with a few sellers giving 1999 or 2000 because the jars themselves carry no printed date. The six-jar set includes scenes titled "A Friend in Need," "A Pleasant Surprise," "Friendship Fiesta," "Father and Son Time," and others, so a buyer building the full set still needs the remaining five numbers. Because no date is printed on the glass, the 1998 dating is offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and is not guaranteed. Bid on the items as pictured.
Condition
Good used condition, sold as-is. The fired-on graphics remain bright and largely complete on both jars, with only light thinning visible at a few edges of the color panels. Both show light overall use scuffing and fine scratching in the glass, most visible across the bases and interiors. Small white specks and light haze appear along the rims and inside the jars in the close-up photographs; some of that is loose dust, but bidders should treat the rims as showing normal shelf wear. No chips or cracks are apparent in the photographs and the rims appear smooth, but the jars have not been examined under magnification and no such guarantee is made. Photos are part of the description.
Notes for bidders
Hand washing only is strongly recommended for fired-on character glassware, since dishwasher heat and detergent are the usual cause of faded and flaking graphics on jelly jar glasses. Avoid abrasive pads, do not soak, and avoid sudden temperature changes. These are thin pressed jars, so use paper separators for transport and do not nest them. Only the pieces pictured are included in this lot.
