TWO VINTAGE LADIES WALLETS - OLIVE-GREEN COWHIDE CLUTCH WALLET AND BURGUNDY-BROWN KISS-LOCK FOLDING WALLET
Two-piece wallet lot, both with multiple storage sections and metal-framed coin compartments. The olive-green clutch wallet has a foldover flap with an embossed oval emblem and contrasting stitching, an interior marked "COWHIDE", a matching green coin compartment with gold-tone framing and clasp, a long zippered pocket, additional slip pockets, and a teal interior with an identification window and clear plastic card sleeves marked "CREDIT CARDS". The burgundy-brown wallet has a smooth leather-like exterior with stitched edges, a silver-tone double-ball kiss-lock closure on its framed coin compartment, and a separate snap-fastened section that unfolds to card slots and larger slip pockets for bills or papers; an embossed interior marking is present but not clearly readable, so maker and material are unconfirmed. Both show noticeable wear including exterior scratches, scuffs and creasing, significant cracking, peeling and deterioration of the green wallet's teal interior at the folds and pocket edges, cloudy worn card sleeves, and darkened areas, scattered light-colored spots and edge and clasp-frame wear on the burgundy wallet. Zipper, snaps and clasps are UNTESTED. Sold as a lot of 2 as pictured.
Description
Pieces/Form: two - one foldover clutch-style wallet, one snap-fastened folding wallet.
Construction/Finish: olive-green wallet with embossed oval emblem, contrast stitching, gold-tone framed coin purse with clasp, zip pocket, slip pockets, teal interior with ID window and clear card sleeves; burgundy-brown wallet with stitched edges, silver-tone double-ball kiss-lock coin frame, snap closure, card slots and bill pockets.
Marks: interior marked "COWHIDE" and "CREDIT CARDS" on the green wallet; the burgundy wallet's embossed interior marking is not legible
Attribution note
Framed kiss-lock coin compartments, clear vinyl "CREDIT CARDS" sleeves and a stamped "COWHIDE" interior marking together point to standard American ladies' wallet construction of the mid-twentieth century into the 1970s, when leather goods were commonly stamped with the hide type rather than a fiber-content label; dealer listings on Etsy, eBay and Poshmark for comparable clutch and kiss-lock wallets are generally dated in that range. The vinyl card sleeves are the usual failure point on wallets of this age and are frequently found clouded, brittle or split, which matches what you describe. These remarks are offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion and are not guaranteed. Bid on the item(s) as pictured.
Notes for bidders
Leather and leather-look wallets: wipe with a soft dry cloth only, never soak or machine clean, and condition sparingly since old finishes lift and peeling interiors cannot be reversed. Keep them away from heat, damp and direct sun, store flat and unstuffed so the folds do not crack further, and open kiss-lock frames gently because old hinges and frame coverings break at the ends. Expect the clouded vinyl card sleeves to stay clouded. Only the item(s) pictured are included in this lot.
