Abamectin is a highly efficient broad spectrum wormer with activity against gastrointestinal, pulmonary and cutaneous nematodes, bots and external parasites. It acts by binding selectively to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, and causes depolarisation of the nerve and muscle cells which leads to paralysis and death of the parasites. Abamectin has good activity against both mature and immature stages of the nematodes. In the horse this is particularly of advantage with Strongylus vulgaris, so reducing the incidence of verminous arteritis and associated colic.
