Description

Old Wooden “military” Battle Rattle White Oak Body Frame measuring 11” long x 4” wide x 1 ¼” thick. Octagonal handle – 5” long x 1 ¼ thick. Wooden pegged body shows no damage. Sounding board shows no visual wear or damage. Ratchet Wheel cog has good even wear. Be sure to check out all the photos we’ve posted on this great Militaria item! Wooden battle rattles or ratchets were primarily used as noise makers to signal alarms for military purposes. Such as calling troops to battle stations etc. The rapid rotation of the rattle’s handle would make a loud, repetitive clacking sound by striking a wooden spring against a ratchet wheel, producing a distinct and effective alarm that could be heard over long distances. Part of the D. Brown Collection
