Rare “Excavated” OVM-Ohio Volunteer Militia Infantry Man Belt Plate *Puppy Paw Back*
Note: Reference to O’Donnell and Campell, Plate #554. It states plates of this letter style would date from 1861 to 1863.
These type of belt plates were used extensively in both theatres of the American Civil War.
Face of the plate is made from rolled brass and die struck.
Back side plate had a molten poured “Lead” finish.
Process was used to secure the belt hook and “Puppy Paw” studs in place.
Condition: Slight bend to plate top left (pictured), no further rim imperfections to speak of. Both the studs and hook are complete and firmly attached.
The Face of the plate has nice detail on the letters, dark brown color with a wisp of green/grey.
